Abstract
Dozens of communists and social democrats who, sometimes voluntarily and sometimes under duress, collaborated with the Gestapo during the Nazi regime lived in the GDR, West Germany and Austria after the end of the war. While previous research on Nazi involvement tended to be limited to bourgeois and conservative circles, this research project examines how the collaboration of communist and social democratic resisters was dealt with in public discourse in the three successor states of the ‘Third Reich’. It analyses legal reappraisals, public controversies, internal party ‘purges’ and biographical continuities.
